Workshop Report

The following document reports from the 1st GIGAS Stakeholder Workshop “Towards the Harmoni-sation of SDI Initiatives” that took place in Brussels on 28/29 January 2009. The workshop was organised by the consortium of the GIGAS project as part of the Convergence and Outreach activities. The overall goal of the GIGAS project (GEOSS, INSPIRE, and GMES, an Action in Support) is to assess and address interoperability gaps and opportunities for establishing bridges between the three initiatives GEOSS, INSPIRE, and GMES. Participants of the Workshop included GIGAS partners and a number of invited external experts.

This report gives an overview on the presentations and discussions that took place during the 2-days meeting. The first day of the meeting was mainly targeted towards information dissemination. The goal of the presentations was to provide the external experts with the necessary background on the GIGAS project and its outcomes so far. On the second day the discussion was opened on the draft recommendations that had been formulated by GIGAS partners, followed by an overview of the Initiative Experts and the Standardisation Organisations on how to proceed with the recommendation once they have been sufficiently discussed and consolidated.

The challenge of GIGAS is to establish an active consensus building forum in the course of the funded phase of the project. This workshop has kicked off the related activities by establishing the first contact between relevant stakeholders and the project as well as by providing valuable feedback to the GIGAS consortium on the relevance of their approach and the needs and interests of the stakeholder community.

The report consits of three documents, the actual report itself, the slides referenced in the report (Annex A) and the participant list (Annex B):
